You're right. "Sorry, I though we were going to go into Alligator, weren't we?" (Or "are.") Sounds more like Phil to me, but maybe not. Anyway, not audience. It could just be a matter of being on automatic pilot -- "music playing the fingers," as it were -- and heading towards Alligator by force of habit. Yeah, the "weren't we" sounds planned ... but then, have you ever had words come out that weren't exactly quite right? ("Let's go up to the basement" or something?) The "weren't we" doesn't necessarily prove they planned a Pig-less Alligator; maybe it's just the way it came out. Pretty rushed little comment in the heat of things there.

Interesting. Cool catch.

I looked up in deadlists the shows where they played The Eleven and Alligator and it only happened 23 times (of course there are probably few more since there are so many missing setlists from '68). However of those 23 shows they only did Eleven>Alligator one time (2-24-68). In contrast the most common transition in those 23 shows was to Death. So I don't think it could be force of habit by the person who is talking. I think it must have been discussed/planned and then aborted by Jerry or Jerry went to Death by force of habit.

Hmmm. Well, force of habit isn't necessarily the best phrase -- more like the fingers were moving there, it sounded like it was coming, he made a mistake and did something Alligator-ish -- but, yeah, if that's the stats, it does seem less likely that the inspiration would flow there unthinkingly. It's true that if they'd PLANNED a Pig-less Alligator, it would seem as if he was more "out." Curioser and curioser.

"Jerry went to Death by force of habit."

Wow! That line caught my eye AND THEN I read your post—not the same meaning when taken out of the context of your post.

P.s. I left a message at for GDAVALON68(?) to stop by here. We'll see.

Sadly, how you read it is was less speculative than how i wrote it.

I saw request for GDAVALON68 to come to the forum and discuss. I hope he takes you up on it.

PS, I am remembering this right? Do you live in AL? If so I hope you weren't effected by the those tornados a few weeks ago.

Yes, I am in B'ham where the storms came through when they finished with Tuscaloosa. Most of the actual vortices were north of us by at least four miles. I found pieces of insulation, chunks of old lumber, and a baseball in my yard the next day that were not there before. We sustained some straight-line damage but nothing like what you saw on TV. (And, now that the TV's are gone, I'm getting calls from clients who are getting jerked around by the insurers.)

Looking north, (yes, we were on the porch), we could see the BIG vortex when it came through (at the time, we thought it was the wall cloud because it was SO large.) And, it was much darker than the surrounding parts of the storm because it had so much debris that it was carrying. (I thought the meteorologists were going to go multi-orgasmic when they realized that the vortex was actually "showing up" on the radar becasue it was carrying so much trash.)

My family and I are all fine. My friends are all fine. But, I do have friends that had friends that perished. And, it appears that Missouri is going through the same thing now.

Thanks for your thoughts,

TOOTMO
